The purpose of this ethnographic study was to describe the meaning of eating in patients receiving continuous home oxygen therapy (HOT). Twenty-five HOT patients with Hugh-Jones II to V grade participated in unstructured, tape-recorded interviews. For these patients eating constituted a key component of remedial action that they believed eases somatic symptoms and leads to cure. ‘Torment of illness’ and ‘unacceptable illness reality’ were two major factors that turned these patients to eating behaviors such as ritualistic eating. This remedial eating not only supported those patients' illness journey but also symbolized their wish for a normal life. The need for dietary intervention that respects those patients' values emerged from the data.
