Recent advances in research on neurophysiology for cognitive deficits associated with dementia have revealed that electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP) have sufficient sensitivity, specificity, and capability for clinical use. New research using neurophysiological techniques, for instance, magnetoencephalography, the combination of functional MRI with EEG and evoked brain potentials by trancranial magnetic stimulation, have been attempting to separate dementia from age-associated cognitive decline. Here, we review the conventional EEG and ERP findings concerning dementia in addition to the specific EEG findings on Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and introduce clinical application of the newly developed clinical neurophysiological tests in the early stage of dementia such as mild cognitive impairment.
