High blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol consumption and arterial fibrillation increase the risk of some subtypes of stroke. Abnormal serum lipid profiles are also potential risk factors. Because these risk factors are associated with lifestyle, stroke is largely preventable via controlling and reducing these risk factors through lifestyle modification, such as ensuring appropriate food intake for controlling body weight, blood glucose, and serum lipids, reducing salt intake, increasing intake of vegetables and fruit, aerobic exercise, cessation of smoking, appropriate alcohol consumption, and stress management.
