  • Look Inside

Wegener's granuloma and other related lesions that occur in the nasal cavity have no definite etiology nor favorable prognosis. However, it is possible that the question of immunity may play some part in their etiology.

Since 1971, the authors have undertaken to make blood test in 14 suspected cases for their serum complement contents. The following results are obtained: (1) Wegener's granuloma and its related nasal lesions showed a definite increase in serum complement.

 (2) When the serum complement shows changes in value, the disease is generally making a poor progress and the prognosis is likewise unreliable. On the other hand, In cases in whom the complement content returned to a normal value, the patient made a response to treatment.

 (3) In 2 cases the complement'showed a marked decrease just prior to their worsening of symptoms. This phenomenon may point to the fact that in the diseased condition the complement system is heavily taxed.
