  • Look Inside

Indiscriminate use of commercially available nose drops causes nasal findings similar to severe degree of vasomotor rhinitis. Typical cases seen in the past five years are presented.

Neurovascular dysfunction is caused by the prolonged abuse of the nose drops. Sustained vasoconstriction is followed by after-congestion which forms the vicious circle for frequent application of the drug. The natural rythm of shrinking and swelling of the nasal mucosa will be eventually replaced by the artificial intervals determined by the drug effectivity.

Discontinuation of the drug is the only effective means by which this condition may be overcome. The healing process may be further assisted by administration of antihistminics and synthesized ephedrin. To ensure the patient of his discontinuation of the drug, psychosomatic approach may also be necessary. A firm belief on the part of the physician and an unfailing patient-doctor relationship are all the more important in curing the bad habit.
