NAGAI reports a case of esophageal foreign body which was caused by lodging of a piece of "pounded rice cake (mochi)" in a elderly wo-man aged 69. Finding the mass of obstruction at the first esophageal constriction through esophag-oscopy it was removed en toto without attempting the removal by piecemeal. The author stresses the point that, in removal of such resilient foreign bodies as that of "mochi", the use of esophago-scope should not be limited to a particular type of instrument or method but, rather, a combinati-on of them so as to be adapted to the needs of the situation.
