 BBB and ischemic brain edema

Endothelial cells of brain capillaries are more resistant to ischemia than brain parenchymal cells. Our experimental results revealed that blood-brain barrier (BBB) does not open at 15 and 30 min after death of experimental animals, while it opens apparently at 1 hr after the death.

Cerebral ischemia induces brain edema. It is generally assumed that there are at least two stages of edema development in cerebral ischemia. The initial stage of ischemic edema is cytotoxic in the sense that it is associated with a decrease in energy metabolism, and is not associated with a breakdown of the BBB.
