  • Look Inside

Resection of thymoma with myasthenia graviswas performed by Blalock at 1939, and marked curative effect was gained. Thereafter, he performed thymectomy for myasthenia gravis, even if the patients had no thymoma.

Now the thymectomy is appreciated as an excellent therapeutic tool for myasthenia gravis. Usually effect of thymectomy is evaluated by remission rate and palliation rate. Average remission rate after 5 years is 50% in nonthymomatous MG and 40% in thymomatous MG. Average palliation rate after 5 years is 90% in nonthymomatous MG and 80% in thymomatous MG.
