Based upon the study of a case, where the left lateral cortex of a young dog was ablated, the cortical connections of the thalamus have been discussed in the present paper.

Although the epithalamus is not degenerated after hemidecortication, the dorsal thalamus shows severe changes. The anterior nuclei other than the nucleus parataenialis are considerably affected. However, the midline nuclei have no relation to the lateral cortex. Among the medial group of nuclei, the nucleus medialis dorsalis pars lateralis and the nucleus laminaris pars dorsolateralis are more or less degenerated. The lateral nuclei and the greater part of the posterior nuclei show heavy changes. Most of the ventral nuclei are also severely affected.

With the exception of the nucleus reticularis, the ventral thalamus remains intact after destruction of the lateral cortex.

Most of the dorsal thalamic nuclei are cortical dependencies, which are always phylogenetically recent as von Monakow indicated.
