The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus is composed of multiple oscillatory neurons which cou-ple and form at least two regional pacemakers. The period of major constitutional oscillators seems to decide that of an animal. The structures other than the SCN can express rhythms with a circadian period. These peripheral os-cillators are desynchronized from the master clock in the SCN by imposing animals to the restricted daily feeding or by chronic methamphetamine treatment. Gene expression rhythms in the SCN are not modified by these treat-ments, while those in other tissues are shifted. Integration of multiple oscillators and multiple pacemakers is indis-pensable for the stable and precise circadian rhythms of mammals.
