  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder which is pathologically characterized by the presence of innumerable extracellular senile plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). Whereas NFTs are related to the extensive neuronal loss found in AD brain, senile plaques appear to be directly involved in AD pathogenesis. The major proteinaceous component of senile plaque is amyloid 8-protein (Aβ), composed of 39-43 amino acid residues, which is proteolytically derived from a large membrane-spanning glycoprotein,β-amyloid precursor protein (β APP).
