神経系を侵すウイルス性疾患は病態の重篤さとウイルスの神経向性という組織特異性の問題で古くから研究の対象とされてきた。急性，亜急性，慢性のウイルス感染症に加え，ウイルスの潜伏感染とその再活性化に触れ，ウイルスの脳障害性を感染経路と脳内進展様式を加えて概説した。また，ウイルスによる脳内病変局在の特異性と細胞の選択性による病態の相異をウイルスと細胞膜受容体の面から紹介し，病態発症機構における分子レベルの解析の必要性を強調した。

Viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) have been the target of investigations by many scientists because of the severe consequences of this illness and also because of scientific interest in viral neurotropism. This paper briefly introduces acute, subacute and chronic viral infections, as well as the modes of latent virus infection and its reactivation, paying special attention to pathological features of viral tissue damage and viral spread through the CNS.
