Since the first proposal of ion-sensitive FET in 1970, various solid-state devices for neurophysiological measurements have been extensively investigated based on the progress of micro fabrication technique. Among them, the electrode-array substrate, on the surface of which multiple micro-electrodes are embedded, was one of the most promising devices for in vitro neural activity recording: Dissociated neurons or brain slices could be directly cultured on the surface of the substrate. The advantage was its capability of long-term non-invasive recording of electrical activity with quite high time resolution.
