HCP-1 is a neuron-specific membrame protein, belonging to a new family of membrane-transporting proteins within cells. The blockade experiments were carried out on the neuronal cultures in order to study the physiological meaning of HPC-1. Inhibition with the antisense oligonucleotids HPC-1 mRNA or microinjection of the HPC-1 antibody into the cultured neurons caused more frequent arborization compared to those of control, suggesting that HPC-1 might regulate neuronal sprouting in an inhibitory manner.
