  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Gamma knife surgery(GKS)is well known to be one of the most advanced minimally invasive neurosurgical treatments, which can control brain lesions without craniotomy. Recently, it has become to be used to manage functional disorders, and especially significant effectiveness and safety of the control of intractable pain have been reported.

Until recently, intractable pain has been treated with various treatment protocols, and its effectiveness has steadily improved. We cannot deny the fact, however, that some patients cannot be treated with total pain removal, and others cannot receive sufficient treatment because of whole body complications. So far, we have applied GKS for those patients in a clinical setting and confirmed its efficacy and safety. Essential trigeminal neuralgia has just become one of common indications of GKS in the field of functional disorders.

In this article, we would like to introduce how we have applied GKS to essential trigeminal neuralgia. In addition, we would like to explain about the treatment application of GKS for“intractable pain”such as cancer pain and central pain with our own treatment experiences and views according to the latest reports.
