Questionnaires were sent to 120 non-urologists in Shizuoka prefecture to investigate how they recognize overactive bladder(OAB)and the currently available clinical guideline for OAB, as well as how they treat OAB with relevant problems in clinical settings. Survey results obtained from 96 non-urologists showed that 71% had treated OAB in the past and most employed were anti-cholinergic agents. The percentages of non-urologists who knew definition of OAB accounted for 45% but only 19% had previously read the clinical guideline for OAB. Examinations recommended by OAB guideline were more frequently performed by non-urologists as they properly understood and recognized OAB and OAB guideline. Given the fact that only about 20% of non-urologists conducted measurement of residual urine, it is conceivable that propagation of the proper treatment methods for OAB following measurement of residual urine is necessary through promoting awareness about OAB and its clinical guidelines.
