  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We treated 5 cases of Kirisawa uveitis, or acute retinal necrosis, with systemic corticosteroid, acy-clovir and gammaglobulin during the acute stage of the disease. The disease occurred unilaterally in all the cases.

Acute retinal exudation started to regress within 10 days after initiation of treatment. Retinaldetachment developed in only one eye and was effectively treated by vitrectomy and scleral buckl-ing procedure. In this particular case, a 22-year-old female, herpes simplex virus DNA was separated from the vitreous by spot hybridation.

The favorable prognosis in the present cases suggests that intravenous acyclovir and gamma-globulin with additional systemic corticosteroid may be of value in the treatment of Kirisawa uveitis during the early stage of the disease.
