　網膜色素上皮層（以上RPEと記す）に関しては，この細胞層が眼内への入射光線の吸収，視紅の代謝に関係していることが長年知られてきたが，近年新しい研究技術の応用によつて，次に述べるような重要な幾つかの機能をもつていることが明らかにされたことにより，ひとり基礎学者のみならず，眼科臨床家の注目をもあつめるようになつた。RPEはその機能として，

　1）貪食作用，なかんずく視細胞外節の貪食

The application of recent advances in labor-atory methods revealed unsuspected functions of retinal pigment epithelium. New concepts of the phagolysosomal system of the pigment epithelial cells may present a key to resolve the pathogenesis of certain retinopathies such as retinal dystrophies and macular lesions in the aging eyes.
