We investigated the population-based prevalence of different types of lens opacity as a part of Monzen Eye Study. Randomly selected 225 persons participated in the study. The series comprised 196 eyes of 101 males and 246 eyes of 124 females. Their ages ranged from 55 to 85 years, average 67.8±7.0 years. Each subject was evaluated by one examiner under mydriasis through slit-lamp biomicroscope. Lens findings were also recorded by Scheimpflug Image System including slit-and retroillumination. Prevalence of the other six abnormal lens findings were:29.1% for fiber folds,41.4% for water clefts,21.1% for vacuoles,28.6% for focal dots,22.5% for retrodots, and 11.5% for coronary cataract. Fiber folds, water clefts and retrodots increased along with aging. Fiber folds were present in 91% of eyes with cortical cataract. Since some of the above six lens changes are associated with visual impairment, present findings promise to be of value in the diagnosis of cataract and in epidemiological studies.
