A questionnaire survey regarding leg cramps was conducted in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LCS) and the elderly general population. The subjects of the study were 120 patients who had undergone decompression surgery without fusion (85 males and 35 females, mean age 73.5 years, mean follow-up time 3.6 years) and 370 elderly residents of a town who had no history of back surgery (162 males and 208 females, mean age75.6 years). The results showed that 85 (70.8%) of the LCS patients and 137 (37.0%) of the control population experienced leg cramps (age and sex adjusted odds ratio:4.6, p<0.01). The leg cramps of 16patients, improved after surgery, but in 40 patients, they were unchanged and in 23, they worsened, and in 47.1% of the patients with leg cramps they interfered with activities of daily living. Leg cramps should be recognized as one of the symptoms of LCS that impairs patients' quality of life.
