When patients are admitted for a proximal femoral fracture, we conduct a simple interview centered on a dementia scale and use a prediction chart to predict their postoperative walking ability. A prospective assessment of the prediction chart was conducted on 345 of the 474 patients, mean age 84.2 years (range:65~98 years), (47 males and 298 females) operated in our hospital for a proximal femoral fracture between June 2002 and August 2007. The sensitivity of the prediction chart was 92%, and its specificity was 91%. The prediction chart was concluded to be an effective tool for predicting the postoperative walking ability of patients with a proximal femoral fracture.
