We assessed the preoperative neck symptoms of 59 patients with compressive cervical myelopathy by means of a modified version of the Neck Pain and Disability Scale. The results showed that 80% of the 59 patients had some neck symptoms before the operation. Neck symptoms of the preoperative cervical myelopathy patients were significantly more severe compared with those of the healthy persons. However, the preoperative neck symptoms of the cervical myelopathy patients were not significantly correlated with their JOA scores. Many cervical myelopathy patients have some neck symptoms, and an independent method, not the JOA score, needs to be used to evaluate their neck symptoms.
