  • Look Inside

Clinical effect of trazodone hydrochloride (TRZ) was investigated in 19 patients (12 male, 7 female) who manifested depressive state during interferon therapy for active chronic hepatitis.

Before TRZ was prescribed, the average score on Hamilton's Depression scale was 20.5 (±5.4). Along with depressive mood, the symptom of agitation, psychological anxiety and anxiety about their physical state were often observed. 16 Out of 19 patients (84.2%) showed 50% improvement in HAM-D score after having been prescribed TRZ. The average score of HAM-D was improved to 5.6 (±6.3). TRZ was effective in improving depressive mood, anxiety and agitation while keeping active chronic hepatitis from worsening.

Depressive state during interferon therapy was not improved in some cases even after the discontinuance of interferon treatment. In 10 cases, antidepressant was prescribed during interferon treatment, alleviating depressive symptoms and making possible the completion of interferon treatment.

When depressive state is manifested during interferon therapy, the provision of not only personal support, but also the prescription of antidepressant is recommended.
