Many women suffer from menstrual symptoms, and a more detailed understanding of their situation is required. Various scales have been developed to assess these symptoms, but the scales commonly used in Japan are retrospective, have long evaluation periods, and do not account for variations in different phases of the menstrual cycle. The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire-Form T(MDQ Form T)is an instrument that allows for immediate assessment of menstrual symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the MDQ Form T in a longitudinal study design, taking into consideration the menstrual cycle's follicular and luteal phases. All the participants(97 women, Age:24.67±6.25)gave informed consent before the study. This study was approved by the Ethics Review Committee of the University of Tokyo. he internal consistency of the scale was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha. The results showed a high level of internal consistency, with α=.97 for the total scale and α ranging from .73 to .93 for the subscales. Test-retest reliability was also confirmed to be high. For a one-month interval, the intraclass correlation coefficients between the first and the second tests were ICC(1, 1)=.69(p<.001)for the follicular phase and ICC(1, 1)=.71(p<.001)for the luteal phase. Convergent and concurrent validity were established by comparing the scores of the MDQ Form T with measures of premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms(PMDD), physical symptoms(SSS-8)and anxiety/depression symptoms(HADS)which resulted in significant correlations. These suggested that the Japanese version of the MDQ Form T is a reliable and valid instrument to assess menstrual distress. This scale would provide immediate information on premenstrual symptoms within the menstrual cycle and would be beneficial in various research and clinical scenarios in the future.
