  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To examine the prevalence of insomnia among patients under chronic hemodialysis, a survey of sleep disturbances was undertaken through a questionnaire directed to 303 adult outpatients. Defining, as a form of insomia, early awakening, difficulty of initiating sleep, and maintaining of sleep, the incidence of insomina amounted to 56.5% in males and 63.5% in females. The incidence increased significantly with age but did not differ by sex and duration of hemodialysis. Insomnia was caused mainly by environmental factors, itching sensations or pains in the shoulder, back, lower back or lower extremities.
