The patient was a man who had idiopathic Meige syndrome since he was 59 years old. When he was 64, he experienced an onset of manic state. Although his manic state improved with blonanserin and quetiapine treatment, no improvement in Meige syndrome was achieved. He was then switched to aripiprazole monotherapy, which resulted in notable improvement in Meige syndrome without exacerbation of manic state.

Aripiprazole acts as a partial agonist of dopamine receptors and does not upregulate the dopamine D2 receptor. This pharmacological action of aripiprazole might have possibly contributed to its effectiveness in treating Meige syndrome.
