The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an intervention of Community Reinforcement and Family Training with the mothers (N=6) of individuals with Hikikomori, a Japanese term denoting “prolonged social withdrawal.” Six sessions of cognitive behavioral group therapy were conducted, with a dropout rate of 16.7% (one participant dropped out after starting a part-time job) and a participation rate of 94.4% for the remaining 5 participants. As a result of their mothers' participation, t wo individuals with Hikikomori engaged in treatment and another two started school or work. The family intervention enhanced the mothers' psychological adaptation, evinced, for example, by decreased negative evaluation. It also improved family functioning. This study concludes with a discussion on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral group therapy for parents of individuals with Hikikomori.
