We evaluated the burden on our hospitals placed by readmissions of 115 ex-inpatients who had long hospitalization period of more than 1 year, using the following 3 indices:readmission rates, readmission period/observation period ratio, and number of occupied bed-years. Among the ex-inpatients, 69 met the inclusion criteria of the study. Of these, 52 were in the community and 17 were in public institutions after being discharged from the hospital for the first time. Over a 3.1-year observation period, 39 ex-inpatients were readmitted to our hospital with a readmission rate of 56.5%, readmission period/observation period ratio of 0.164, and a total of 11.3 occupied bed-years, which signifies a high rate of readmission among subjects and relatively low hospital burden, allowing a reduction of 58 occupied bed-years. Since 10 of the 69 subjects had at least 1 readmission period exceeding 1 year, ex-inpatients should be seen as a high-risk group susceptible to long hospitalization. A well-designed community care plan is essential for their management.

We observed 5 types of readmission patterns for 69 subjects, namely “successful”, “occasional”, “frequent”, “unsuccessful”, and “prolonged”. Management of “unsuccessful” and “prolonged” admissions is considered particularly important, since this will enable a further reduction in hospital burden.
