The present study was designed to investigate the influences of psychiatric clinical interview training sessions. The study was made several years after the sessions had taken place.
Questionnaires were completed by 29 of 30 physicians who had participated in the sessions as interviewers.
What remained most in their memories were their own impressions rather than facts about the patients interviewed. The contents of what they recalled, rather than being the consciousness and thought of their patients, was more after their expressions, appearance, behavior and way of speaking.
Many of the images were recollections of the interviewees’ own feelings of surprise and unexpectedness to themselves in the video replays rather than the actual scenes of the interviews. Many of the interviewers had clearer memories of the discussion meetings, and video replays than of the interviews themselves.
Many said that the interviews were of more value, when time had passed rather than immediately after they had taken place.
Because of the wide variation of replies, it was suggested that at the next similar type of study, more effort should be made to consider the past experiences of individual interviewers.
