  • Look Inside

The seasonal variation of body temperature regulation was studied on six physician when they were immersed in the water-bath of 28 C in summer as well as in winter. The same experimental procedure was taken to compare the difference in the thermoregulatory reac-tions revealed by these healthy subjects.

1) The physical morphometric data of the body-heights, weights, body surface area and of the skinfold thickness were not found dif-ferent in summer and in winter.

2) On the baseline stage the room temper-ature in winter was 20.6-25.0 C while those in summer was 27.0-31.1 C. The mean skin tem-perature and the thermal circulation index were also found lower in winter than in sum-mer. No significant difference in the metabolic rate was not found.

3) In the water-bath the mean skin tem-perature and the thermal circulation index decreased more rapidly in winter than in sum-mer.

4) The fall of rectal temperature was found slower in winter than in summer.

5) The maximum thermal insulation was larger in winter than in summer.

6) The metabolic rate revealed more rapid and greater increase in winter than in sum-mer. The tendency was much significant on the thinner subjects.

7) It was concluded that the body temper-ature regulation upon cold exposure was signi-ficantly different in the different seasons.
