This article presents the clinicopathological features of esophageal salivary-gland type tumors. A “salivary-gland type tumor” is an extra-salivary tumor with histological features resembling those of primary salivary gland tumors. Although there are more than 30 histological types in primary salivary gland tumors, only two types, namely MEC(mucoepidermoid carcinoma)and ACC(adenoid cystic carcinoma), are known to originate in the esophagus. At present, the diagnostic criteria of esophageal MEC defined by the Japanese Classification of Esophageal Cancer differ from those of primary esophageal MEC. This difference leads to misdiagnosis of primary esophageal MEC ; therefore, unified criteria for diagnosis of primary esophageal MEC are required. Esophageal ACC is extremely rare, and discrimination of true ACC from basaloid squamous carcinoma with ACC-like features can be difficult. Recent advances in fusion gene analysis of salivary gland tumors are expected to be applied for esophageal tumors.
