  • Look Inside

689 gastric ulcers were detected in otherwise seemingly healthy people, 321 showed the natural progression of gastric ulcers and were successfully monitored over a period of five or more years.

The following conclusions have been reached: (1) So long as the probability of gastric ulcer recidivation remains, a complete diagnosis cannot be established based on the varied aspects of x-ray scarring.

 (2) Probability of recidivation is much greater in cases where scarring aspects could be characterized by specific findings, i.e. convergency of folds, disordered areae gastricae.

 (3) Accordingly, probability of recidivation is much smaller where no trace of scarring is evident.

 (4) Resulting from the long period of gastric ulcers, treated by drugs, it has been concluded that the longer the period of scarring, and the less the frequency of recidivation, the greater the chance of complete healing.
