To investigate the realities of diagnosis of the cardiac early cancer of the stomach, our cases were divided into two subgroups as follows: the first term (1978 to 1986); 78 lesions including 29 early cancers and the last term (1987~1996); 86 lesions including 54 early cancers. The proportions of early cardiac cancers to whole early cancers were 4.6% in the first term and 8.1% in the last term. The proportion of early cardiac cancers to whole stage of cardiac cancers were 37% in the first term and 63% in the last term, and those of mucosal cancers to early cardiac cancers were 41% in the first term and 59% in the last term. These results suggested improvement of diagnostic ability. However, forty percent of the whole cardiac cancers were larger than 40 mm in size, therefore the diagnostic ability to detect small lesions in the cardiac region did not seem to be improved.
