In barium enema examination for diagnosis of vertical invasion of colorectal submucosal (sm) cancer, impaired pliability is specifically demonstrated in patients with cancers classified relatively as sm2 and sm3, i. e. submucosal invasion is deeper than one third of the thickness of the submucosal layer. This study was done in order to find out whether this impaired pliability is of diagnostic value in the diagnosis of sm cancer with submucosal invasion deeper than 1,000μm. Results : Diagnostic accuracy was as follows. In the protruded type of sm cancer, sensitivity was 77%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%. In the superficial type, sensitivity was 79%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%. It was considered that impaired pliability recognized in barium enema examination is a finding of diagnostic value in the diagnosis of sm cancer with submucosal invasion deeper than 1,000μm.
