THE EFFECT OF CATARRHAL INFLAMMATION OF THE EUSTACHIAN TUBE AND THE MIDDLE EAR ON THE NEGATIVE AIR PRESSURE IN THE TYMPANIC CAVITY.
The author devises a monometer by which to enable an acurate determination of the negative air pressure in the tympanic cavity through a punctured opening of the tympanic membrane. The apparatus consists of a calibrated glass tube 0.05mm in radius with a few drops absolute alcohol, colored with fuchsin as an indicator which is placed in the lumen of the tube. One end of this tube is fitted to an injecting needle 5 cm in length, while the other is closed. The volume of the enclosed air beyond the fluid is measured as 0.15708 cc. and the distance from the fluid to the needle attachment is 40 mm.
