Purpose:To clarify the status of asthma symptom control among Japanese asthmatic patients;whether there are any seasonal or mindset changes, and how these impact patients’daily life and potential treatment expectations. Method:An Internet survey was conducted on asthmatic patients aged 15 years or older who are undergoing drug treatment with inhalant steroid drugs. The survey was performed twice and 636 patients who answered both surveys were included in the evaluation. Results:More than half the patients were experiencing symptoms more than once a week. Although 66.5% of patients were satisfied with their treatment, more specific questions revealed that patients were feeling restrictions in their daily life and had unmet needs which left them unsatisfied. Conclusion:The study confirms that there are still a significant number of asthmatic patients in Japan that remain symptomatic despite usual care. In medical care of asthmatic patients, it is necessary to confirm whether symptoms were present more than once a week while confirming with each patient the actual symptoms experienced and potential expectations for treatment though specific questions in order to find the optimum treatment and treatment goals. It is important for doctors to share these optimum treatment and treatment goals with their patients and work together on treatment with them in order to raise their treatment motivation.
