要旨

　ユタ大学麻酔科の教授として活躍した上田一作は，戦後間もなく慶應義塾大学を卒業し，生化学の学位取得後，フルブライト留学生として渡米，ユタ大学レジデントとして麻酔科医の第一歩を踏み出した。一時帰国で国立がんセンターと大阪大学で麻酔科医として勤務したのちに，再度アメリカに戻り，ユタ大学において麻酔メカニズムをテーマとする研究室を立ち上げた。そこは日本から多くの研究者を受け入れ，麻酔メカニズム研究のメッカとして国内外に知られていた。

　Issaku Ueda, a professor of anesthesiology at University of Utah（Salt Lake City, UT, USA）, graduated from Keio University shortly after World War II with a degree in biochemistry, then went to the United States as a Fulbright student and began his medical career as an anesthesiologist in residency at University of Utah. He later temporarily returned to Japan to work as an anesthesiologist at the National Cancer Center and at Osaka University, then returned to the U. S. and established a laboratory on anesthesia mechanisms at University of Utah. His laboratory was known internationally as a mecca for physicochemical research on mechanisms of anesthesia.
