 Issaku Ueda, a professor of anesthesiology at University of Utah(Salt Lake City, UT, USA), graduated from Keio University shortly after World War II with a degree in biochemistry, then went to the United States as a Fulbright student and began his medical career as an anesthesiologist in residency at University of Utah. He later temporarily returned to Japan to work as an anesthesiologist at the National Cancer Center and at Osaka University, then returned to the U. S. and established a laboratory on anesthesia mechanisms at University of Utah. His laboratory was known internationally as a mecca for physicochemical research on mechanisms of anesthesia.
