Purpose: To clarify the construct of nurses' followership in acute hospitals

Method: In this study, a total of 18 nurses participated in a semi-structured interview and were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method.

Results: Nurses' followership is organized into 10 categories and 40 subcategories. These 10 categories are as follows: Encourage administrators to provide prompt risk management; Pursue patient-centered care for critical conditions; Have excellent behavioral characteristics; Share ever-changing information with administrators; Provide suggestions to administrators and help them change; Provide feedback on administrator's policies; Promptly assist in the management of ever-changing work; Improve the mental health of staff; Contribute to staff development; and Promote communication within the team.

Conclusion: Nurses' followership promoted risk management by administrators to avoid crisis situations associated with patient safety. This study illustrated that follower nurses were actively involved in improving the mental health and education of staff while collaborating with nurse administrators.
