Hand function was analyzed from a perceptual motor viewpoint. 131 kinds of activities that represent the smallest units of purposeful activities were selected from example sentences and subjects in a Japanese language dictionary. Each task was performed by 12 occupational therapists, their verbal comments on the perceptual motor process written on cards which were ordered for similarities and explained in sentences. Common elements were analyzed based on these data and put into the smallest categories. Again, from each category the special characteristics were collected in middlelevel categories and defined. Next, similarities between these middle categories were analyzed and grouped into the largest categories and defined and named. The results were 36 smallest, 14 middle and 6 largest categories. The 6 largest categories were named: gathering, spreading, separating, modifying, supporting and moving. We anticipate using this analysis of hand movement for analysis of and grading of activities.
