Occupational therapy (OT) was conducted for inmates with disabilities at the Harima Rehabilitation Program Center, which is one of four Private Finance Initiative (PFI) prisons in Japan. Two case studies treated with OT are described. Mr. A is a male in his 30s and has intellectual disabilities. He studied social life skills and social welfare services.Because of Mr. A's low intellect and attention deficit, we attempted to improve his motivation, and increase his study load. Mr. B is a male in his 40s with pervasive developmental disorders, and was very motivated and interested in studying. We respected that, and through intellectual activities we added communication practice. The results indicate that individual OT was effective for inmates who could not sufficiently adjust to the prison environment. It assisted in guidance for reform, and guidance in school programs that were mainly conducted in groups. This study suggests the usefulness of using OT at penal institutions.
