Since traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers are increasing, cognitive functional tests have been introduced for license renewal of elderly drivers in Japan. As the relationship between driving fitness and cognitive function is unclear, this study assessed the correlation between on-road driving evaluation and functional visual field and cognitive functions. The elderly drive vehicles frequently regardless of their cognitive decline, and seven out of 20 participants caused minor accidents during a one-year period. Age and cognitive functions did not correlate significantly with driving frequency, driving confidenceor on-road driving evaluation, while functional visual field scores and on-road driving evaluation showed significant correlation. The study indicates that the field of view score is a useful predictor of driving fitness.
