INTRODUCTION-Misleading chemistry values resulting in*1 erroneous clinical interpretation can result from*2 druginduced physiological abnormalities or interference in analytical methodology by drugs or drug metabolities. The following case illustrates this problem.

Case A fiftynine year-old insulin-dependent diabetic woman was admitted to the hospital with a two-day history of fever,*3 chills and coughing up "greenish" sputum. The patient was using 30 units NPH insulin every morning. Her past medical history indicated a previous allergic response to penicillin. One week prior to admission, she was started on 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide every morning for elevated blood pressure.
