温度刺激検査は，外耳からの体温と異なる温度刺激で内耳を刺激し，誘発される眼振を定量的に調べ内耳機能を評価するものである．左右の半規管機能を別に調べることができ，また，同じ検査の中で前庭性眼振の抑制機能であるvisual suppression testを行うことで中枢所見の一端を調べることもできる．

The caloric test is a clinical examination to evaluate the degree to which the vestibular system is responsive and also how symmetric the responses are, between left and right.　It is a test of mainly lateral semicircular canals induced by thermal stimulation introduced into each external ear canal separately.
