  • Look Inside

Hearing evaluation was done in patients with Ramsay Hunt's syndrome by puretone audiometry. Approximately 50% of the patients with herpes auricularis and facial palsy showed a slight to moderate degree of sensorineural deafness in high-frequency tones. Recruitment phenomena were observed in 6 out of the ti patients with a moderate deafness, suggesting that herpes zoster virus may attack the sensory hair cells of the organ of Corti rather than the nerve fibers in the cochlea. Fairly complete or partial recovery of the facial and cochlear function was noted in the majority of the cases examined.

The pertinent literature is briefly reviewed.
