MIZUOCHI reports that effective treatment of tinnitus aurium has been accomplished with use of direct and alternating electric currents. For the source of direct current negative galvanic current introduced by Harris and others is used; for alternating current, the masking tone generator. Stimulation of the ear is realized by placing contact point in the external canal which is saturated with physiological saline solution while the opposite pole the zinc plate is placed on the malar surface of the face. Stimulation is carried to the point of recognizing a definite pain sensation which generally required 15 to 20 minutes of time. With direct current stimulation cases of tinnitus aurium due to tubotympanitis were brought to, either, complete abatement, or, considerable improvement, both of which accompanied with improvemeut of conversational hearing; those cases in whom tinnitus appeared to be due to conductive disturbances were uneffected by this treatment. With alternating current 29 cases out of 40 in whom tinnitus is accompanied by nerve deafness either improved or abated but no improvement in hearing is noted thereby.
