Ⅰ．歴史的展望

　組織培養法を用いたグリオーマの研究は，1928年Kredel^27），1929年kredel^28），Buckley^6）らに始まるとされている。彼らはHarvey Cushingの研究室でこの研究を行なったのであり，Cushingの示唆によるものであるという。脳外科の父Cushingがこの分野でもまた父であったということは，その後の発展に照らしてみてもまことに意義あることと言わねばならない。この研究は脳神経外科の発展ときわめて密接な関連を保ちつつ今日に及んでいるからである。1933年からRussell, Bland^47）らが神経系の腫瘍病理学上における組織培養法の意義と重要性を唱え，発展させた。そして彼女の"Pathologyof Tumors of the Nervous System"（1959）^48）の中にLumsden^31）が組織培養についての一章を分担したことは周知のことである。

The history and recent studies on gliomas by method of tissue culture have been reviewed. Harvey Cushing already suggested usefulness of the method of tissue culture for the diagnosis and the study of histogenesis of brain tumors, and his colleagues reported early results of the work in 1928. Lumsden and Kersting published their monographs on the morphological study of tissue culture of gliomas and other central nervous system tumors in 1959 and 1961 respectively.
