The ability of cells to adapt in hypoxic environment takes a major part in the defense mechanism to protect cellular biosynthetic properties in ischemic tissue damage. This adaptative processes are mainly characterized by the commencement of anaerobic energy metabolism and the expression of a specific set of proteins, termed as oxygen regulated proteins (ORPs).
