  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Many patients with psychosomatic diseases show specific affective and cognitive deficits termed “alexithymia”. Alexithymia may also develop or increase in response to serious life trauma or distress, and to decrease with symptom improvement. This latter phenomenon indicates that alexithymia may be involved in homeostatic defense mechanisms to the stresses, as well. The concept “alexithymia”, therefore, leads us to think about the relationships between body, emotion, and language. Although there is no evidence that “alexithymia” directly induces bodily organic changes, “alexithymia” clearly links with illness behavior and becomes a key-word for our better understanding and treatment of, not only patients with psychosomatic diseases, but people with somatic complaints.
