We carried out a study on neuropsychological mechanisms in kinesthetic alexia due to left parietal-lobe lesions. We suggested that any deficits in the following functions might cause kinesthetic alexia:1)retrieval of kinesthetic images(motor engrams)of characters from kinesthetic stimuli, 2)kinesthetic images themselves, 3)access to cross-modal association from kinesthetic images, and 4)cross-modal association itself(retrieval of auditory and visual images from kinesthetic images of characters). Each of these factors seemed to be related to different lesion sites in the left parietal lobe.

We further presented two left-parietal lobe damaged patients who showed somesthetic alexia limited to graphesthesia with the right hand. This somesthetic alexia was thought to be due to deficits in retrieving kinesthetic images of characters from the stimuli of graphesthesia. The common lesion sites of these two patients was the subcortical white matter below the left intra-parietal sulcus. It was suggested that damage in these regions might have disconnected the fibers between the left postcentral gyrus and the left superior parietal lobule, where kinesthetic images of characters are assumed to be stored.
