Abstract. Purpose:To report the correlation between glaucomatous visual field defect and thickness of parapapillary retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Cases and Method:This study was made on 50 eyes of 40 patients with open-angle glaucoma in the wider sense. The age ranged from 48 to 83 years, average 67 years. Visual field was measured by glaucoma hemifield test of Humphrey perimeter. Thickness of parapapillary RNFL was measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Results:Retinal sensitivity in sector 2 and 3 was significantly correlated with thickness of RNFL in the superior and inferior temporal sector respectively. Retinal sensitivity in sector 5 was significantly correlated with thickness of RNFL in the temporal sector. In 25 eyes with early-stage glaucoma, thickness of RNFL in superior and inferior temporal sector showed significant correlation with retinal sensitivity in sector 3 only. Conclusion:Diagnosis of glaucoma may be facilitated by measurement of thickness of RNFL in superior and inferior temporal sectors.
